This was a very special one.

I’m so happy to be able to contribute to this lovely couples wedding day. Kirsten requested I make a wallet as a wedding gift for her Fiancé Brogan, made from the leather car seat of his late fathers 2008 VW Golf. It’s a lot to consider, what the Groom has been through, and while making this I’ve considered if it were me in that place with my Dad. Time together is so precious, you can make it all count and it’s still not enough. It was an odd pressure to place on the materials I’m working with, I hope I’ve done them justice. I included a keyring of the material in the hope Brogan can read that in his Dad’s voice and weather a few of lifes storms easier.

At the start we thought the seat was made of faux leather as the headrest and back pocket were, however we found the main body of the seat was made of a Chrome-Tanned leather, more for upholstery than wallets but doubling it up made it alright to work with. I happened to have a lovely dark grey Mozart leather that accented it really well and I’m glad Kirsten was all for it, If we had made it entirely out of the seat’s leather it wouldn’t have been functional with how thick it’d have been, even with skiving it down a lot, there also wasn’t enough workable material for that.

A Lovely project. That I’m proud to have been a part of. I was also careful to make templates of the leather sections cut away and I’m planning on potentially reupholstering the seat with veg tan, but that is a project for another day.
